Viva la Vida Fest 2026: Austin's Biggest Día de los Muertos Celebration Returns Oct. 24

One of Austin's most colorful days of the year is almost here. Mexic-Arte Museum's 43rd Annual Viva la Vida Festival and Parade takes over downtown on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and it is completely free.

Viva la Vida is Austin's largest and longest-running Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. It is a joyful, family-friendly way to honor loved ones, celebrate Mexican and Mexican American culture, and spend a fall afternoon with your neighbors on Congress Avenue.

What Is Día de los Muertos?

Día de los Muertos is a tradition that celebrates life and remembers loved ones who have passed. Families build ofrendas (altars) filled with photos, favorite foods, candles, and keepsakes to welcome the spirits of those they have lost. You will see bright orange marigolds, papel picado (cut paper banners), sugar skulls, and beautifully painted faces.

The mood is warm, colorful, and festive, not spooky. That makes it a great outing for all ages and a meaningful way to learn about one of the most important cultural traditions in Texas.

What to Expect at Viva la Vida Fest 2026

The day kicks off with a Grand Procession at 12 p.m., and festival activities run until 6 p.m. The procession is a highlight and a great way to start the day.

After the procession, here is what you can look forward to:

  • Mariposa Plaza with hands-on art activities for kids and adults
  • Traditional foods from local vendors
  • Local artists and retail booths for one-of-a-kind finds and gifts
  • A low-rider exhibition showing off some of the best rides in Central Texas
  • Live performances throughout the afternoon

The festival is presented by the City of Austin's Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment (ACME) Department and is part of the citywide Día de los Muertos Celebrando Juntos programming.

Tips for a Great Day

A little planning makes festival day much easier, especially with kids in tow.

  • Arrive early. The best spots along the parade route fill up before noon.
  • Skip the parking hunt. Downtown garages fill fast on festival days, so rideshare, CapMetro, or biking can save you time.
  • Dress for the weather. October afternoons in Austin can still be warm. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.
  • Bring a little cash. It is handy for food and small vendor purchases.
  • Join the tradition. Many guests wear marigold crowns, festive clothing, or face paint. It is all part of the fun.

Make a Day of It: Visit the Museum

If you want to go deeper, stop by Mexic-Arte Museum at 419 Congress Ave. Its current exhibition, Día de los Muertos: Coleccionando Memorias, is on view through January 3, 2027. The show draws from the museum's permanent collection and reflects on decades of collecting Day of the Dead art and traditions.

It is a beautiful way to understand the meaning behind the festival, and the museum is right in the middle of the action.

Why Events Like This Matter to Austin

Festivals like Viva la Vida are a big part of what makes Austin feel like home. They bring neighbors together, support local artists and small businesses, and keep the city's culture alive downtown.

For many of my clients, being close to events like this is one of the top reasons they choose to live in or near central Austin. Neighborhoods within an easy ride of downtown give you front-row access to festivals, live music, museums, and some of the best food in Texas.
