ACL Festival 2026: Tips and Tricks From One Austin Local to Another
Austin City Limits Music Festival returns to Zilker Park for its 25th anniversary on October 2–4 and October 9–11, 2026. With more than 100 performances spread across nine stages, ACL is one of the best weekends of the year in Austin—but it is also hot, crowded and much easier when you have a plan.
Whether this is your first ACL or you go every year, here is what to know about getting there, dressing for the day and navigating the changes coming in 2026.
What’s New at ACL in 2026?
ACL is celebrating its 25th anniversary with headliners including Charli XCX, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Twenty One Pilots, Lorde and The xx. Skrillex will headline Weekend One, while Kings of Leon will appear during Weekend Two.
VIP also received an upgrade this year. Complimentary drinks are back, along with a dedicated VIP entrance and a new air-conditioned lounge. For larger groups, ACL has introduced a private, air-conditioned Speakeasy Lounge designed to serve as a home base inside the festival.
Another important change is the festival shuttle location. In 2026, complimentary shuttles will depart from Sand Beach Park at the corner of Walter Seaholm Drive and Electric Drive, rather than Republic Square. Shuttles begin running at 11:30 a.m. each festival day and drop guests near the Barton Springs West entrance.
Getting to ACL: Do Not Try to Park Near Zilker
There is no festival parking at Zilker Park or in the surrounding neighborhoods. Trying to find a secret parking spot nearby usually ends with a long walk, a ticket or both.
The complimentary festival shuttle is one of the simplest options. Park downtown or arrange a ride to Sand Beach Park, then take the shuttle directly to the festival. At the end of the night, return to the Barton Springs West entrance for the ride back downtown.
CapMetro is another option. MetroRapid Route 803 travels near Zilker, but check the current schedule and service alerts before leaving home.
If you live close enough, walking or biking along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail can be surprisingly easy. Bike and scooter parking will be available near Stratford Drive, Azie Morton Road, Toomey Road and Sterzing Street.
Rideshare works well when arriving, but leaving is another story. At the end of the night, thousands of people request rides at the same time. Official pickup areas include:
- Austin High School
- Carpenter Hotel
- 2525 Wallingwood
- Lee Barton Drive
- West Riverside Drive
My advice is to decide on your transportation plan before you enter the festival. Screenshot your route, choose a pickup location and make sure everyone in your group knows where to meet. Cell service becomes unreliable when the park is packed.

How to Dress for ACL
Festival fashion is part of the fun, but Zilker Park is not forgiving. You will spend hours walking across grass, dirt and uneven ground, and Austin can still feel like summer in October.
Start with comfortable, broken-in shoes. This is not the day to test new boots, heels or sandals that have never made it through several miles of walking. Your shoes will probably get dusty, muddy or stepped on, so plan accordingly.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is best. Add a hat, sunglasses and a bandana, which can help with sun, sweat and the dust that tends to rise from the park after several dry days.
Check the weather that morning, but do not assume a cloudy forecast means you can skip sunscreen. ACL allows non-aerosol sunscreen in containers of 3.4 ounces or less. Aerosol sunscreen is prohibited.
Austin weather can also change quickly. If rain is possible, choose shoes that can handle mud and bring a lightweight poncho if the current festival rules allow it. Umbrellas are not permitted.
The outfit test is simple: Can you comfortably walk, sit on the grass, stand for several hours and use a portable restroom in it? If not, reconsider.
Pack Light and Know the 2026 Bag Rules
Small clutch purses and fanny packs measuring 6 by 9 inches or smaller do not have to be clear, but they may have only one pocket. All larger bags must be clear and smaller than 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
The less you carry, the faster you will get through security. A few essentials are worth bringing:
- An empty reusable water bottle or approved hydration pack
- A portable phone charger
- Non-aerosol sunscreen
- Sunglasses and a hat
- A bandana
- Factory-sealed electrolyte packets
- Hand sanitizer
- A small blanket or towel
- Necessary medication in its original pharmacy-labeled container
Empty personal misting fans are allowed if the bottle is no larger than 1.5 liters. Outside food and drinks, coolers, aerosol products, glass containers, selfie sticks and umbrellas are prohibited.
Always review the official ACL bag policy before leaving home, because festival rules can change.
A Few More Tips From a Local
Arrive earlier than you think you need to. Entry lines grow later in the afternoon, especially before the bigger performances. Getting there early gives you time to find the stages, refill your water bottle and enjoy a few smaller artists before the park gets crowded.
Choose a specific meeting place before your group separates. “Meet near the stage” will not work when thousands of people are standing near the same stage. Pick a permanent landmark and an exact time.
Take screenshots of your schedule and the festival map. Do not depend entirely on the app or text messages when cell service slows down.
Eat before the dinner rush. Food lines get longer later in the day, so grab something between sets instead of waiting until everyone in the park is hungry.
ACL is completely cashless. Credit cards, debit cards, mobile payments and registered wristband payments are accepted. Set up your wristband before arriving, but keep one physical card with you in case your phone dies.
Most importantly, drink water before you feel thirsty. Start hydrating before you arrive, refill throughout the day and take breaks in the shade. October in Austin can still be hot, and a full day at Zilker requires more energy than people expect.
The Bottom Line
The best ACL strategy is to plan the practical details and stay flexible with everything else.
Know how you are getting to and from Zilker. Wear something that can survive the heat, dust and several miles of walking. Pack light, study the updated rules and choose a few must-see performances without trying to schedule every minute.
Your feet will probably hurt by the end of the night, and the walk home will feel longer than it did that morning. But when the sun goes down, the skyline lights up and your favorite artist takes the stage, it is easy to remember why ACL remains one of Austin’s favorite traditions.
